Historical note: The Air Service of the United States Army was created in 1918. On 2 July 1926, the Air Service was renamed the Army Air Corps and remained a combatant arm of the U.S Army. On 20 June 1941, Army Air Forces (AAF) was created to oversee both the Air Corps and Air Force Combat Command (formerly General Headquarters Air Force or GHQAF). On 9 March 1942, AAF was made one of three autonomous Army commands and the Air Corps was disbanded. In Sept 1947, the United States Air Force was established by law as a separate military service and most of the AAF transferred to the USAF. The United States Space Force was separated in 2019.
