Analytical Mechanics for Engineers (Third Edition, Fifteenth Printing), 1941, 1948-04
Scope and Contents
Document Type: Textbook (Technical).
Purpose: Training and Education.
Authority: Author Expertise.
Scope (Preface to Third Edition and Preface to First Edition)
"This book, as its name suggests, presents those principles of mechanics that are believed to be essential for the student of engi-neering.
Throughout the book the aim has been to make the principles of mechanics stand out clearly; to build them up as much as possible from common experience (the student's experience); to apply the principles to concrete problems of practical value; and to emphasize the physical rather than the mathematical interpretation of the principles."
"The principal changes in the third edition of this book consist of the addition of many new problems and figures; some reduction in the text discussion in the first three parts (Statics, Kine-matics, and Kinetics), although the number of problems in these three parts has been increased considerably; more emphasis on variable forces in Part III (Kinetics); and the addition of a new chapter on mechanical vibrations in Part IV, which consists of a group of special topics somewhat more advanced than those treated in the first three parts."
