The problem was solved by the fundamental understanding and empirical rules established over the years from many hours of rig and engine testing.

This paper attempts to set out the fundamentals and principles of this understanding. It was written by Geoffrey Wilde, after he had retired from the Company, as a design exercise for his students at the Universities of Liverpool and Loughborough where he was a visiting Industrial Professor."
