Scope and Contents

Document Type: Textbook (Technical). Purpose: Training & Education. Authority: Author Expertise. Series: Northrop Institute of Technology Series

Scope (from Preface): "Maintenance and Repair of Aerospace Vehicles, formerly titled Aircraft Maintenance and Repair, is one of the Northrop Institute of Technology series of textbooks describing the construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of structures, systems, and powerplants for aircraft and other aerospace vehicles. These textbooks are designed to be of particular value to those preparing for Federal Aviation Administration certification as Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics and to technical personnel such as inspectors, maintenance engineers, shop foremen, and instructors.

Maintenance and Repair of Aerospace Vehicles covers those subjects which are specifically related to the repair and construction of airframes, aerospace structures, and systems provided for the operation of such devices. The other texts in the series are Basic Science for Aerospace Vehicles, Electricity and Electronics for Aerospace Vehicles, and Powerplants for Aerospace Vehicles.

The third edition of Maintenance and Repair of Aerospace Vehicles incorporates many additions and changes designed to bring the book up to date. Extensive new material has been included in the areas of arc welding, metals and materials, covering methods, hydraulic systems and pneumatic systems for large aircraft, auxiliary systems, and repair-station operation. All chapters have been updated as required. As a result, the text provides a most comprehensive source of information for the aerospace student, technician, and instructor.

Each topic in the Northrop series of texts is explained in a logical sequence so that the student may advance step by step and build a solid foundation for increasing his knowledge. The student's understanding of the explanations and descriptions given in the texts is greatly enhanced by the use of numerous pictures, charts, and line drawings. Review questions at the end of each chapter enable the student to test his knowledge after having studied the related material.

The Northrop texts are so organized by subject matter that instructors in public and private technical schools, training departments of aerospace companies, vocational schools, high schools, junior colleges, and other similar organizations are provided with a wealth of material arranged conveniently for classroom use. In addition, the texts may be used by a student for self-advancement or by the man on the job as a ready reference for practical application."
