A pair of North American O-47Bs from the 115th Observation Squadron, California National Guard form-up with a third O-47B after a routine anti-submarine patrol off the Southern Calif. coast. The crews had taken off earlier, flown their separate grid search areas and rendezvoused over Ontario, Calif at 4:00 P.M. Heading home five minutes later, Sgt. Jack Quinn took this off-the-cuff, once in a lifetime aerial portrait. Lt. Hendler, in lead plane and Lt. Gerrick, in wingman position, ease up to the camera on July 30, 1942, a beautifully clear, warm afternoon.
