Purpose: Informational.
Authority: Author Expertise.
Scope: This "Newcomen Address" was delivered February 16, 1956 at a National Mewcomen Society dinner held at The Pierre [hotel], New York, N.Y by Mr. R. S. Reynolds, Jr. Reynolds was a Member of the Newcomen Society and President of Reynolds Metals Company, Richmond, VA.
Contents (from the Introduction): Narrates the history of R. S. Reynolds, Senior and the aluminum company that bears his name.
From page 5: "Tonight it is our privilege to pay tribute to a young pioneer in one of America's most dynamic industries—Aluminum. The ascendency of the Reynolds Metals Company on the horizon of American Business has been almost meteoric. The human story behind this impressive growth is a story basically of the courage and vision of a Southern family. In a sense, we tonight are paying tribute to its founder and leader: the late R. S. Reynolds, Sr."
From page 24: :This, then, is Reynolds Metals Company in 1956 -- a 400-million-dollar business with a promise of vast future growth, a leader in one of today's most exciting industries. It has been, as I said at the outset, to a large extent the life and the dream of one man, my father. From its modest start as a typical small enterprise, it has become a modern American corporation, with all of the promise and responsibility that that term implies. It is playing a significant part, we like to think, in the growing strength of the American economy."
