Scope Note: SCOPE: Recorded information, often standardized in format and content and treated as a unit. Records include such compilations of data regardless of medium, that are created, received, and maintained by a project, agency, institution, organization, or individual in pursuance of legal obligations, in the transaction of business, for the storage of research and knowledge, or for other purposes. // NOTE: In an aeronautical or aerospace context, many records are considered vital records for safe and efficient operations, production, installation, retro-fit, upgrade and maintenance of aeronautical and aerospace vehicles and equipment, as well as mishap investigations. Such records are often required to be kept by law or government, military or corporate policies and procedures. Entire vehicles (aircraft, missiles and spacecraft), as well as individual motors, on-board equipment and related ground equipment are tracked by various identification means such as serial and fuselage numbers, part numbers and installation location. Records include maintenance records, operations records (such as flight and engine logs), aircrew problem reports, and red-lined drawings created or updated during production, installation, retro-fit, upgrade and maintenance work.
In an aeronautical or aerospace context, the term "technical data" includes: approved operating manuals, maintenance manuals, other technical manuals, technical drawings and some aeronautical and aerospace records. Technical data consists of engineering data, drawings, decriptions and procedures that have been approved by the manufacturer, civil or military authority, or other authorized entity for use by aircrew or technicians building, installing, retro-fitting, upgrading, operating, or maintaining aeronautical and aerospace vehicles and equipment. Aeronautical records often play a key role in future operations and maintenance actions. They may also be incorporated into technical data revisions. Since the early days of aviation, the use of current and approved technical data is often encouraged or required.
